What is a Spike?

Spike

A Spike is a type of user story in Agile project management where the team cannot estimate the effort required to complete it without conducting further investigation. Spikes are used when there is a high level of uncertainty or complexity regarding a particular task, feature, or technology. To address this uncertainty, the team undertakes a time-boxed research or exploration activity aimed at gathering the necessary information to make more accurate estimates and informed decisions.

The purpose of a Spike is to reduce risks and improve the team's understanding of the problem at hand. This could involve prototyping, exploring different solutions, conducting feasibility studies, or any other research activities deemed necessary. By dedicating time specifically to investigate these unknowns, the team can clarify requirements, identify potential challenges, and devise a clear plan for implementation. Ultimately, Spikes help in breaking down complex or ambiguous user stories into manageable tasks, ensuring that the project progresses smoothly and efficiently.
